How we ranked these

We compared published eligibility ages, age caps, reimbursement levels and waiting periods for the one pet insurer live on this page, as published on 3 June 2026. Ranking is editorial: compensation from partners affects which providers appear and can affect order. Figures shown are published ranges, not offers - your premium depends on your pet’s breed and age, your ZIP code, and the deductible and reimbursement level you choose, and pre-existing conditions are typically excluded. Full detail in our editorial policy.

What pet parents ask

Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Almost never - conditions your pet showed signs of before the policy started, or during the waiting period, are typically excluded. That is the strongest argument for enrolling while your pet is young and healthy: the earlier the start date, the less history there is to exclude.

How soon does cover start after I enrol?

Not immediately - pet insurers apply a waiting period between enrolment and active cover, so a policy cannot be bought on the way to the vet. Wag lists a waiting period of 0-14 days depending on the type of claim, and accident cover generally kicks in sooner than illness cover.

Is my pet too old for insurance?

Many insurers refuse new enrolments past a certain age, which is why the age cap is worth checking before the premium. The plan on this page enrols pets from 8 weeks old and has no upper age limit, so senior dogs and cats can still get a new policy.

What decides how much I pay for pet insurance?

Your premium is set by your pet’s breed and age, your ZIP code, and the deductible and reimbursement level you choose. Two households with the same dog can pay very different premiums, so compare quotes on the same deductible and reimbursement settings to see a fair difference.
